Michael Cerveris’ Loose Cattle Releases “Pony Girl” Music Video from ‘Fun Home’

Fun Home is one of the most popular shows on Broadway today. However, there is one song from the show that many fans have not heard in full, until now. Actor Michael Cerveris (Hedwig and The Angry Inch, Sweeney Todd, Assassins) has recorded one of the show’s trunk songs to life with the help of his country band, Loose Cattle. The track, “Pony Girl,” is only heard in part in the show as as a 45 second a cappella lullaby. Now, Loose Cattle has released an all new music video for the track.

Michael Cerveris recently spoke to Rolling Stone about how he took Pony Girl from a trunk song to a country cover:

“I assumed it was some old folk lullaby and I said something like that one day, and Lisa [Kron] said, 'Oh no, we wrote it.' I asked to hear the whole thing and it sort of sounded like a country waltz to me, so I gave it my band. I think I forgot to tell them where the origin of it was, and it's a sweet song, so they thought it was an old country classic.”

Cerveris went on to discuss what makes the song so great, adding:

"The song is lyrically so simple, but the way it functions in the show is, literally, a lullaby to put Alison asleep but the lyric, in the context of their relationship, is also sort of heartbreaking. It can be seen as a father singing to his child who he knows is going to grow up and leave and move on and have a life -- that's just the nature of parents and children -- there's always heartbreak in that. But from the daughter's perspective, especially in the show, it's being sung by a father who is going to abandon her not just for that night but for the rest of her life pretty soon."
