About 'The Great Gatsby' Broadway Production

According to the Hollywood Reporter, preview performances will start on March 29 at the Broadway Theatre in New York, which is also where the recent musical project "Here Lies Love" was held. As for the actual opening night, it is planned for April 24, this spring.

Chunsoo Shin, a well-respected individual within the Korean theatre industry and this current project's lead producer, said in a statement: "I am passionate about producing this show because it provides a modern audience with the true essence of idealism that is expressed eloquently in the novel and now on stage."

"The Great Gatsby is a masterpiece that grows and changes as it's experienced by each new generation, in every culture, and people-and yet, still maintains its uniqueness, with its fascinating characters that burst with vitality," he continued.

Music and lyrics for the upcoming production are by the Tony nominees Nathan Tysen and Jason Howland, who are also musically responsible for the projects "Paradise Square" and "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical," respectively.

As for the book, it is written by Kait Kerrigan, the 2006 recipient of the Jonathan Larson Grant also known for "The Mad Ones" musical. Marc Bruni is reprising his role as production director alongside choreographer Dominique Kelley, who worked on "Mariah's Magical Christmas Special."

A New Perspective in the New 'The Great Gatsby' Adaptation

Its story has been told in numerous adaptations of the original 1925 widely-famous novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, set in the opulence and glamour of the roaring '20s and centering around Jay Gatsby's tragic and zealous pursuit of Daisy Buchanan, a rich young woman who was also a previous flame for the titular character.

Kerrigan told Playbill in a past interview that one of her goals with this new stage adaptation is to take a closer approach to the telling of the female characters' side of the story as they were "kind of given short shrift in the novel, and painted as very two-dimensional,"

"I was excited about trying to explore the actions that they take, and trying to make sense of them. So that, not that you sympathize with them, but that you understand them," she said.

Also, a separate and immersive production of the same IP has recently opened Off-Broadway, and another musical adaptation, led by Florence Welch, Thomas Bartlett, and Martyna Majok, will start showing later this year.
