Eli Manning leads one of the most popular teams in the NFL. Over the years, he has led the Giants to multiple championships and received several personal awards. In recent news, however, the Giants have openly expressed their apprehension to extend the one-time great's contract. This is clearly a bombshell for the legendary quarterback, who stated just last year that he plans on representing the northern state for many years to come.
Before his time as a professional, Eli played college ball for the University of Mississippi. During his time there, he set or tied 45 single-game, season and career records.
Predictably, he was brought up to the big leagues with a first overall pick by the San Diego Chargers in the 2004 NFL Draft. He was immediately traded to New York.
Until now, it looked like he would be a Giant for life. However, according to Fansided, it looks like his contract will not be extended:
"The Giants were unlikely to extend Eli Manning this winter. This [has been classified] a wise move, given Eli's age, erratic recent performance, and the fact that the team could always franchise-tag the Quarterback as a last-resort next season...[Analysts] provided further insight into the Giants' thought process and the strategy behind this approach to the two-time Super Bowl MVP's contract. The Giants wouldn't extend Manning in order to clear cap space for free agent signings..."
It is surprising to hear this news about someone who has done so much for the franchise.
Based on a previous statement by Eli, captured by CBS New York, the wavering legend, most likely, feels the same way:
"Eli Manning believes he has a lot of good years of football left and he hopes to continue playing them with the New York Giants. The 33-year-old quarterback said [last season] that he still loves what he is doing after 11 seasons, two NFL titles and two Super Bowl MVP awards...his "best-case scenario" would be to retire as a member of Big Blue. However, he also felt that his brother, Peyton, would never play for anyone but the Indianapolis Colts..."
